Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
Alrighty Then.
This is Jim Carey's break out role. I would say that there is no one like Jim Carey but really there have been many great actors with such a funny overacted style. From Danny Kay to Richard Pryor to Robin Williams to Kramer, but Jim Carey does have his own style which really makes you laugh. There are so many one liners I just can't count and that makes it fun to watch a second, third, fourth time. You catch something new every time you watch it.
I would say a movie with a plot about a detective that solves cases involving peoples pets could not be that good of a movie, but some how it just seems to pull the story all together in the end. There are not only funny bits and pieces, but it tells a good story that keeps you interested. I love a movie that does not fit the cookie cutter mold and you could never figure out the ending before you finish watching the movie i.e Usual Suspects.
Although I can not watch this movie and say that it is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen it does two things well.
1. It makes me laugh (everytime I watch it)
2. And I never saw that coming.... (the first time I watched it)
I will advise that when I was 18 or so and over at my grandmothers house watching my younger cousins (between 8-12 yo.) I saw that this movie was on HBO so I put it on and I thought it would be a fun movie to watch. At the time I was thinking I would be cool older cousin let them watch but afterwards I will admit I was doing more trying to cover up of their eyes and answering tough questions later.
"I don't get it?.... she was a man?.... but how did she...?" You get the picture.
This movie gets a rating of: In my collection (click to see rating system)
Questions to ponder while watching this movie:
Is there more fiber in pet food?
Could the Dolphin's really be in the Super Bowl? (sorry-had to-Pats fan)
